Ultra-D to replace 3D released at CES 2012

Tired of the 3D glasses already?  Getting headaches from them like ME!!!!

A solution appears to be on the horizon.  It still remains to be seen if 3D is the same FAD we saw in the 50's and 60's when it comes to Satellite and Cable content.  As well as BluRay releases.

Stream TV Networks, Inc’s product will allow users for the first time to control the amount of 3D rendering which should help those that find 3D movies to be UNCOMFORTABLE.  The product also is said to NOT REQUIRE Glasses.  The process also will allow for conversion of 2D movies to 3D as well.  This is a technology that should be watched closely as it’s developing.  We could start to see it in TV, Converter Boxes, Tablets, Desktop PCs, Gaming, Laptops, Digital Signage, Mobile Phones, Digital Picture Frames very soon.

China launches tests 500 km/h super high-speed train

Beijing:  China has launched its first test train that is said to be capable of reaching 500 km per hour from the present 300 km per hour a feat if accomplished would be a big leap forward in high speed train technology.

China's largest rail vehicle maker, CSR Corp Ltd, over the weekend launched the train.

The six-car train with a fair shaped head is the newest in the CRH series.

It has a maximum tractive power of 22,800 kilowatts, compared with 9,600 kilowatts for the CRH380 trains currently in service on the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, which holds the world speed record of 300 km per hour.

The grey-coloured train carries testing and data processing facilities, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Ding Sansan, the company's chief technician, said the concept of the the super-speed train design was inspired by China's ancient sword.

The bodywork uses plastic materials reinforced with carbon fiber.

Shen Zhiyun, a locomotive expert and academician said the testing of the super-speed train with speeds of up to 500 km per hour will provide useful reference for current high-speed railway operations.

Bouncing Data Would Speed Up Data Centers

A plan to bounce signals off the ceilings inside data centers could solve a major performance bottleneck.

Inside the huge data centers operated by Internet companies like Google, Amazon, and Facebook, information is processed at blistering speed, but it still has to be moved between different machines through relatively slow wiring.

In theory, this bottleneck could be avoided by adding wired links between racks, but that would be very expensive and, short of a complete architectural redesign, not particularly practical. Transmitting data wirelessly would be simpler, but achieving the required speed would normally require a line-of-sight connection, which is impossible in a packed data center.

Researchers from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Intel's labs in Oregon have come up with a clever solution: bouncing wireless signals off the ceiling, which they say could boost data transmission speeds by 30 percent.

Congestion caused by short bursts of activity inside data centers is a growing problem, says Heather Zheng, an associate professor of computer science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, who led the work.

Zheng and colleagues used 60-gigahertz Wi-Fi, which has a bandwidth in the gigabits-per-second range and was developed for high-definition wireless communications (the first commercial products that use the standard will hit the market next year). However, it has its limitations, says Zheng. To maximize the bandwidth and reduce interference between signals, it needs to be focused into narrow beams that require a direct line of sight between endpoints. "Any obstacle larger than 2.5 millimeters can block the signal," she says.

One way to prevent the antennas from blocking each other would be to allow them to communicate only with their immediate neighbors, creating a type of mesh network. But that would further complicate efforts to route the data to the appropriate destinations, says Zheng. Bouncing the beams off the ceiling directly to their targets not only ensures direct point-to-point communication between antennas but also reduces the chances that any two beams will cross and cause interference. "That's very important when you have a high density of signals," she says.

Flat metal plates placed on the ceiling can provide nearly perfect reflection. "You also need an absorber material on the rack to make sure the signal doesn't bounce back up," says Zheng.

Working with colleagues at UCSB along with Lei Yang from Intel Labs in Oregon and Weile Zhang at Jiao Tong University in Xi'an, China, Zheng created a simulation of a 160-rack data center to see how the system might affect performance. "Our simulation shows that wireless can add 0.5 terabytes per second," she says.

IBM is also looking into using  wireless technology in data centers, says Scott Reynolds, a researcher at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York, who has been developing 60-gigahertz systems. "These data centers are just choked with cables," he says. "And so every time you want to reconfigure one it's very labor intensive and expensive." But one problem with turning to wireless transmission, he adds, is that "you need to have hundreds of these wireless data links operating in a data center to be useful." Since 60-gigahertz Wi-Fi has only four data channels, it's important to configure the beams so they don't interfere with each other.

Zheng and her colleagues are now working on building a prototype data center to put their solution into practice.

2012 Dooms Day : What it means to Ordinary person ?

2012 means a lot to people. If you aren’t aware of the information of 2012, then here is short conversation about this. Everybody in the world is anxiously preparing for the day of 2012/21/12; it doesn’t matter whether it is preparing where to live after the day or purchasing old left missile silos, among many others.

According to information from Mayan Long Calendar, that day the entire world is supposed to come at halt; it means that through some believes, every creature on the world will end. What type of believe is really in this information?
2012 Dooms Day

It is confirmed that major things are expected to happen at this time. There will be many activities carried out unlike any other time ever before. During this time, it is expected that many chores will start again many times worse than any other we have experienced in history. There will be a lot of heat from the solar that will not only act as giant EMP, but also spoil the ozone layer. It is also the time that will be the main break up of the solar system. Others believe that this will result to all types of gravitational shifts; which will divide the continents as they are today.

In any of the cases, no types of preparation or escape that will hinder this to happen.. Reversing of magnetic poles and climatic change are among things have regular occurrences over the global history. You can experience that there are major changes in the earthquakes, weather and volcanoes in new places each day. While this may be historic to many, major changes for more than 300,000 years and we have been there before that time. Still, all this will not begin to happen at specific date, years or duration of weeks or months. This is a process of many years, and the main causes are our follies, such as polluting environment, mining fossil fuels and many others.

What is the meaning of 2012 according to me? One thing I believe is that there will be major changes in spiritually, physically and even politically. So far, many regions have discussed about Armageddon that is planning how to come up with solutions that will work out global damages.

What is it happening today? Either their globe will end or not, maybe it will be a point that people’s faith will be tested. To me, I will prepare on how I will survive during the doomsday. I will prepare for food and other supplies, sovereignty, and many others. How much can you do for preparation if the world is ending and no surviving again anyway? it is okay? If you believe that in few years to come, life will come to an end, the only thing you can do to prepare yourself is to befriend your family and friends; also, you are supposed to keep away from all hatred and conflict you have and be happy always.

A globe studded with cameras captures a panorama if you throw it in the air

If you toss this foam-covered ball skyward, an accelerometer inside determines when it has reached its maximum height. At that moment, 36 cameras are triggered simultaneously, creating a mosaic that can be downloaded and viewed on a computer as one spherical panoramic image. The ball was created by researchers at the Technische Universität Berlin after one of them, Jonas Pfeil, labored to create panoramas while on vacation in Tonga. On that trip, he tried a cumbersome process that required snapping pictures in different directions and stitching them together later in a photo-editing program. Now he hopes to license the camera-ball technology for commercial production.

A. Outer Shell

The sphere, about the size of a softball, is protected by blocks of foam. Thirty-six cell-phone camera modules, each with a resolution of two megapixels, are set into the surface. Each module stores its portion of the mosaic until it is transferred to the ball's microcontroller.

B. Inner Shell

The prototype's inner shell, made from a strong yet somewhat flexible nylon material, gives the ball structural strength. The shell was made using a 3-D printing service.

C. Power Source

The ball's power source, a relatively heavy lithium-polymer battery, is secured in an inner cage to keep its center of gravity close to its geometric center so that it behaves predictably when thrown.

D. Microcontroller

A microcontroller uses data from an accelerometer to determine when to trigger the cameras. Then it stores the resulting mosaic of images. The prototype can store one mosaic, but it has a hardware slot for a memory card that could store additional panoramas.

E. Panorama

Images are uploaded to a personal computer via a USB connection. Software on the computer allows panoramas to be rotated or enlarged, and portions can be exported as 2-D images.

Better Cooking through Technology

The former CTO of Microsoft has created a gigantic guide to kitchen science that could transform the way we eat.

To see Modernist Cuisine is to covet it. Which is why, one morning in May, the team that spent six years creating the oversized, over-everything five-volume work came from Bellevue, Washington, to New York City to introduce the wondrous object. And it is why a group of chefs, writers, and TV personalities (so stellar that one guest remarked, "The only other event that could bring these people together is a funeral") gathered at Jean-Georges, the flagship restaurant of Jean-Georges Vongerichten, at the invitation of Tim and Nina Zagat. They were there to meet Nathan Myhrvold, the mastermind and financier of a book so expensive to create that he refuses to say how much he spent (other than to say it was more than $1 million but less than $10 million). They wanted to try the pastrami cooked sous-vide for 72 hours, the "tater tots" dunked in liquid nitrogen before being fried, the fruit juices spun in a centrifuge, the mushroom omelet striped with powdered-mushroom batter so that it looked like a piece of upholstery, with a perfectly spherical, magically just-cooked egg yolk right in the middle. But they really wanted to see the book.

And it is a wondrous object. Modernist Cuisine's five volumes comprise 1,522 recipes and 1,150,000 words of text on 2,438 pages, almost every one of them illustrated with color photography and charts, with dozens of gee-whiz, never-before-seen photographs of beautiful free-form color swirls that could be textile designs but turn out to be life-threatening pathogens; or sculptural objects that could be outdoor art installations but are mussels suspended in clear gelatin; or stunning anatomies of a painstakingly shelled lobster or flayed monkfish or whole chicken; or spectacular cross-section cutaways of pieces of equipment you never thought would or should be sawed in half, like ovens, woks full of hot oil, and kettle grills with white-hot smoldering coals. It weighs 40 pounds, four of them just ink. When Wayt Gibbs, the book's editor in chief, met me later that week in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at Toscanini's, an ice-cream parlor and intellectual salon heavy with MIT students and faculty, he painstakingly unwrapped the gigantic carton he had lugged on a portable dolly from Bellevue to New York and then to Boston. The café-goers grew silent and stared at the huge white volumes in their clear Lucite case, one of them later wrote me, as if they were the monolith in 2001.

Potential future car technologies include varied energy sources and materials, which are being developed in order to make automobiles more more energy efficient with and reduced regulated emissions. Cars are being developed in many different ways.

With rising gas prices, now the future of cars is leaning towards fuel efficiency, and energy-savers, hybrid vehicles, battery electric vehicles and fuel-cell vehicles.

 Energy sources

Main article: Alternative fuel vehicle

One major problem in developing cleaner, energy efficient automobiles is the source of power to drive the engine. A variety of alternative fuel vehicles have been proposed or sold, including electric cars, hydrogen cars, compressed-air cars and liquid nitrogen cars.

In one experiment done to improve the future of cars, an old kind of battery was installed which can not be removed, and recharged in two different ways. First, by a generator integrated with the IC and second by removing the cassettes so that they can be recharged off-board in the home ( Charters, Watkinson, Wykes, & Simpkin, 2008).

 Energy saver

Conventional automobiles operate at about 15% efficiency. The rest of the energy is lost to engine and drive-train inefficiencies and idling. Therefore, the potential to improve fuel efficiency with advanced technologies is enormous.

Various technologies have been developed and utilized to increase the energy efficiency of conventional cars or supplement them, resulting in energy savings.

Regenerative braking technology saves and stores energy for future use or as back up power. When conventional brakes are used, 100% of the kinetic energy lost is converted to thermal energy, and dissipated in the form of heat. Regenerative braking recovers some of this energy to recharge the batteries in a hybrid vehicle.
BMW's Turbosteamer concept uses energy from the exhaust gases of the traditional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) to power a steam engine which also contributes power to the automobile (Hanlon, 2005). This can increase energy efficiency by up to 15%.
Compressed air Hybrid is an engine made by researchers at Brunel University in Britain, which forces highly compressed air into the engine, which they claim reduces fuel consumption by 30%.
Utilization of waste heat from D.W. as useful mechanical energy through exhaust powered steam, stirling engines, thermal diodes, etc.
Using computational fluid dynamics in the design stage can produce vehicles which take significantly less energy to push through the air, a major consideration at highway speeds. The Volkswagen 1-litre car and Aptera 2 Series are examples of ultra-low-drag vehicles.

 Materials

Duraluminum, fiberglass, carbon fiber, and carbon nanotubes may totally replace all steel in cars (potentially improving lightness and strength). Aluminum, carbon fiber and fiberglass are currently being used more in cars today.
Plastic and foam for the car's shell; foam can provide additional safety for pedestrians, ... and can also make the car buoyant.

Nasa research indicating that half of the stars in the universe are orbited by planets much like Earth has reignited speculation about the existence of alien life.

Numerous scientists and politicians have stated their belief in the existence of aliens and UFOs

Experts examining results from the Kepler telescope have identified more than 1,200 planets in orbit around distant stars, 54 of which are a similar size to Earth and in habitable zones from their suns.

The research follows several recent discoveries which point to the possibility of life on other planets.

Last year, Nasa scientists claimed they had found vital clues which appeared to indicate that primitive aliens could be living on Titan, one of Saturn’s biggest moons.

Data from Nasa's Cassini probe revealed the complex chemistry on the surface of Titan, which experts say is the only moon around the planet to have a dense atmosphere.

Experts suggested that life forms may have been breathing in the planet’s atmosphere and also feeding on its surface’s fuel.

What exactly is a lunar eclipse?
NASA's website purports the final lunar eclipse of 2011 will be a total lunar eclipse. That means the moon will be completely darkened by the shadow of the earth. The alignment must be perfect for the moon to pass behind the earth. The National Weather Service states a lunar eclipse can only happen during a full moon. There are different stages of the eclipse as the moon slowly moves into the earth's shadow and blocks the sunlight that reaches our closest heavenly body. The next total lunar eclipses will happen in 2014 and will be able to be seen over the entire North American continent.

What factors may prevent seeing the eclipse?
When the moon sinks below the horizon, the eclipse will be unreachable to those on the ground. If you happen to be on an airplane flying west at the time of the eclipse, you will have a prime viewing spot to see the darker colored moon. Weather and cloudy skies may also hide the eclipse from ground-based earthlings. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will have a unique perspective on the events of Dec. 10. Cameras and sensors on the probe will get a close-up view of the shadow as well as take temperature readings of moon rocks.
